APRIL
2004
CAPTAIN'S NOTES: Greetings From River Tallow, Winter Convention is over and we had a great dinner! Thanks to all the SPVHS members who helped with the weekend activities. The trees have arrived and have been planted, thanks to all who helped.
Spring is here, finally, so dig out those moldy old buckskins and start thinking about this new years rondy season. Our trip to Chadron is fast approaching (see the Trapper Crafters section for details).
I recently received a proposal by the Fort Lupton Young Marines to use our range, this group is much like the other youth groups we currently let shoot at our range, they have their own certified instructors and insurance. A club meeting is scheduled for May 8th (see below notice) so please be prepared to have some comments on this issue and others, please be positive!
Thanks for all your help and support, until we meet again. Watch yer top not and keep yer fires small. Wah!

TRT MEETING
There will be a TRT meeting, Saturday May 8 at 6PM in the visitor’s center.
A potluck will precede the meeting, so please bring something to share.
TRT MUZZLE LOADING EDUCATION
A Tallow River Trappers Muzzle Loading Education Session was held on April 17.
Seven Tallow River Trappers attended the basic muzzle loading education session on Saturday, April 17 at the SPVHS/TRT visitor’s center and shooting range. The session outline followed the formal NMLRA basic course and consisted of 3 hours of “classroom” discussion of muzzle loading topics and 3 hours of practical work at the range.
Actually, only 4 of the attendees were TRT members at the beginning of the class, but Gilbert Grimes Jr. became a family
member when his dad (Gilbert Sr.) signed the family up for SPVHS/TRT membership at the conclusion of the training. Also, John and Bryant Everson are family members of SPVHS and now plan to join TRT also.
Attending in addition to the Eversons and Gilbert Jr. were Donna Bear, Jan Clower, Michelle Cyr, and Bill Crowley. Paul Kelly, Bill Lang and John Callor presented the information and helped shooters at the range.
Some of the material may have been a “refresher” of what some attendees already knew, but there were topics that may have shed new light on how to go about having safe and rewarding fun with a muzzleloader.
While there are no “secrets” to having more fun with a muzzleloader, the individuals attending the training will probably tell you that the session was worthwhile from several perspectives. Even experienced muzzleloaders who have not attended any type of structured training session on rifle, pistol, and shotgun muzzle loading might glean some benefit from attending these periodic TRT sessions, and their experience would be beneficial to the sessions.
If any of the attendees had any doubts about the potential accuracy of the front-stuffers, it was quickly put out of mind after some incredibly accurate shooting by the “students”. John Everson was already following-up at the range on Tuesday with several other TRT members and some of the other “newly trained” shooters” plan an outing on April 24th. (weather permitting).
In summary, it was a fun training session and the shooting at the range was great. Moreover, we are confident that everyone has learned improved ways to load, shoot, clean guns and be safe while having fun. The training also resulted in a total donation of $35 to the Fort Fund.

There were four people for the Easter Sunday shoot. They included Jerry Farringer, Duane Jones, John Callor and Deek Flinchpaugh. There were two targets shot just for fun. Jerry and Deek each took high score in each target.
Looking forward to seeing everyone in May.

TRAPPER CRAFTERS
The Trapper Crafters will be taking a field trip to the Museum of Fur Trade in Chadron Nebraska. April 30 – May 2. We plan on actually touring the Museum at 10AM on Saturday, May 1. Chadron is about a 5-hour drive from Denver.
Please call Nancy Dawdy and let her know if you plan on coming on the field trip. The Museum of the Fur Trade is not open on May 1, but will open for our group. We will not be entering through the front door, and we must attend as a group. So if you arrive a little late and we weren’t aware you were coming, you may not be able to get in.
We plan on spending Friday night at Fort Robinson in Nebraska. (Fort Robinson is about 30 minutes from Chadron and about 4 and ½ hour drive from Denver) You may either camp (full hookup is $18.00 and primitive is $10.0) or stay at the lodge (lodge rooms are $35.00 for a room with a queen bed) or rent a cabin (cabins rent for $80.00). If you camp and arrive after 5PM you must pay your camping fees in the morning, the office opens at 8AM (you do not need to reserve a camping spot). If you want to stay at the lodge or rent a cabin for the night, you must either arrive before 5PM or call ahead and prepay. You can reach the lodge at Fort Robinson by calling 308-665-2900.
