Tallow River Dispatch

 July 2004

CAPTAIN'S NOTES:Greetings From River Tallow,

Our rendezvous season is in full swing.  Many of our members are just back from the Rocky Mountain Nationals near Cortez Colorado and Bayou Salado Rendezvous dear Hartsel, Colorado.  On a sad note to the Bayou Salado Rendezvous, over the weekend of July 24th we lost one of our brother buck skinners to a massive heart attack, despite immediate and valiant efforts to save his life.  Chuck Durnin (Mountain Man name - Mungondi) will be missed.

Let us all take a moment every day to let our friends and family know how much we love them and to settle disputes that we may have because life is precious and short.

I am thinking of having a TRT meeting Thursday night, September 9 in the rendezvous area. (This is during the Trapper Days rendezvous.)  Check the August Dispatch for time and exact location.

May God bless you and yours and keep you safe until we meet again.

THE COLORADO STATE BIG BORE CHAMPIONSHIP

This year TRT took over sponsorship of the State Big Bore
Championships. The match was started in the 1970's by the St.
Vrain club. It was held at their range in Longmont for years,
then moved to Lyons around 1990.  However, due to the work of Bill Crowley and Bill Lang, the range in Ft. Lupton is a much better venue, and it just made sense for TRT to take over the event.  The shoot was successful and brought in about $750.00. We expect it to just get better over time.

First I need to mention the people who made it happen:  Getting the targets, putting together the target packets, and (most importantly) making sure everyone paid beforeleaving-Bill Lang.  Coordinating the event with TRT's calendar, set up, and registration- John Callor.  Preliminary work, printing, scoring, and computer- Paul Kelly.  Putting together the awards and running the award ceremony- John Ycas

Now for some results. To keep it short I'm only going to give the top three finishers in each category.   In the Women's

Percussion Marcia Kelly, Jane Lewis, and Corky Brown finished 1-2-3. In the Women's Flint it was Jane Lewis, Marcia Kelly, and Ilea Kelly. No records were broken in either category.  In the Men's Percussion John Ycas, Leroy Arntson,  and Jerry Farringer were first, second, and third. In the Men's Flint the order was Ron Abbott, Tony Hecker, and Doug Davis, with Ron setting a new aggregate record of 166X, and Tony a new 50 yard record of 44.  In the Really Big Bore (58 caliber and above) the top three finishers were Jim Eckersley, Ron Abbott, and Paul Kelly. Jim Eckersley set new records in the aggregate (131X) and the 100 yard Buffalo target (44x), and Paul Kelly tied the 100 yard musket target record (45).  There were no juniors, but the sub-juniors were Issabella and Dakota Arntson.

Given the quality of the range and site, I would love to see
TRT sponsor more shooting events.

NATIONAL RENDEZVOUS REPORT

Since we all had such a great time I though I would give a report on the Rocky Mountain National Rendezvous.

The following members of TRT attended (if I left you out I apologize, let me know and I will mention you next month) : Jan & Jerry Clower, Kendra Clower, Justin Clower, Mike Shaver, Ryan Shaver, Joan Morris, Nancy & Garry Dawdy, Mike and Donna Bear & family, Rick and Donna Davis, Michelle Cyr, Jean Heyer, Janet and Kurt Ballantyne, Stacy & Todd Holden, Romulo and Ellen Cervantes.  So as you can see we had a large representation.

The rendezvous was held on a large private ranch near Dolores, Colorado.  There were plenty of large pine trees for shade.  Although it got pretty hot during the day, it cooled off well at night.  You could also find relief during the day in the shade.  Several groups also went about 10 miles to the river to cool off during the heat of the day.  Others took day trips to Mesa Verde to see the sights there since we were so close.

Our camp seemed to attract the musicians at night, bribing them with food helped.  One night we had 5 guitars(including our own Joan Morris) and a bass fiddle around the camp.  The bass fiddle player was also a professional jews harp player and did a solo on the jews harp that was incredible.  Needless to say the music was incredible.

It was also nice being lulled to sleep by the sound of distant drums.

It was also nice to reacquaint ourselves with friends made over the past several years and to make new ones.  There was a large representation of rendezvousers from all over Colorado, but also from states far away and even some from overseas.

There were  other activities such as shooting and archery and hawk and knife.  Jerry Clower and Rick Davis went on an overnight trek that ended with a stop at the range.

When is the next rendezvous? (see next article)  I can hardly wait!
