Projects

The first major project for the South Platte Valley Historical Society was to acquire the original site of the fur trading post Fort Lupton and surrounding area.  With the help of local pioneers, pictures of the site, students from local colleges, and professional consultants, a Site Plan was developed for the Fort Lupton Historic Park.
We are building the Fort!

Construction began on the foundation this Fall. Many members of SPVHS and TRT donated time, and many local merchants donated materials. The construction of the walls will start this fall, with the front and part of the side walls (phase 1) scheduled to be completed this spring and summer. If you would like to help, please send us a email, or watch the calendar for construction dates.

In 1999, the 1875 Independence Schoolhouse restoration was completed by Society volunteers with a grant from the Colorado Historical Fund.  The schoolhouse is the first permanent building in the Historic Park.

Major restoration is needed.
The current project is to restore the Donelson House, which was donated to the Society in 1996.

An architectural firm was hired to design the restoration, and the work is to be completed by a contractor hired by the Society.  This project will be paid for with a grant from the Colorado Historical Fund and matching funds raised by Society volunteers. The Society is very interested in acquiring a windmill, barn, and other farm buildings of the same vintage as the Donelson house.

Like any property owner, South Platte Valley Historical Society finds maintenance to be an on-going project.  If you are interested and would like to help, watch our Calendar page for scheduled work party dates.

Funds for the Society's projects are raised through membership dues, civic donations, fund raisers, and the diligent work of "grant writers".

Visitor Center             The Society's Board of Directors authorized the purchase of a used modular building to be used as a temporary Visitor Center for the Fort Lupton Historic Park. The Center, once remodeled, will house the Society's office, a gift shop, a reference library and reading area, and facilities to provide light refreshments.
