Historic Park Tours

Enjoy a leisurely tour of the Fort Lupton Historic Park.  The tour takes approximately 2 hours, but can be shortened if necessary.  The Historic Park currently includes the 1875 Independence School, the 1860's Donelson House, and the reconstructed Fort Lupton (Originally Fort Lancaster).

The tour starts at the Visitor Center with an overview of the site and a timeline of the South Platte Valley Historical Society.  While at the Center visitors can examine the displays and look at available history books and small gift items.

Next go to the original site of Fort Lancaster, which later became known as Fort Lupton, with stories and an explanation of the marker.  Continue on to the re-constructed fur trading post and imagine yourself transported back one-hundred seventy years in time.

Then on to the Independence School House, with details of the history of the building, how it came to the Historic Park and restoration of the structure.

Complete the tour with the Donelson House.  Built after the South Platte River flood of 1864, the house has been restored to an 1893 photograph.  All furnishings for the Donelson House were donations which were subsequently restored by members of the Society.

Parking is available for busses and vans.  Walking between the structures is recommended, but parking is available at each of the exhibits for those who have difficulty getting about on foot.

Cost:  Donation to the Society

Availability:  15 days minimum advance notice.  Preferably on a weekend, but some week day tours may be arranged.
